Get Shorts and Swimsuit Ready with Spider Vein Treatment
Did you spot some new spider veins? If you’ve noticed those web-like veins on your legs when the weather warms up, you’re not alone. Those veins stand out more in the sunlight.
That said, they don’t have to ruin your dreams of wearing shorts or a swimsuit with confidence this summer, and now is the perfect time to get started.
This month, Dr. David T. Jacobs highlights four ways you can eliminate spider veins at South Shore Vein and Aesthetic Medicine.
What are spider veins, and why do they show up?
Spider veins are small blood vessels that are visible just beneath the surface of your skin. They often form red, blue, or purple clusters or branching patterns. These clusters also resemble spider webs, hence the name, spider veins.
They can develop for a variety of reasons, including:
- Genetics
- Hormonal changes, including pregnancy
- Prolonged standing or sitting
- Aging
While they’re usually harmless, many people treat them for cosmetic reasons or because they cause mild discomfort.
4 ways to get spider veins treated before summer
Not all spider veins are the same, which is why additional options are available depending on the size and type of veins being treated.
As a fellowship-trained and double-board-certified specialist, Dr. Jacobs will recommend the best approach based on your needs. We offer the following spider vein treatments:
1. Sclerotherapy
At South Shore Vein and Aesthetic Medicine, Dr. Jacobs uses sclerotherapy as his primary treatment for spider veins.
During the procedure, he injects a small amount of a specialized solution into each problematic vein. This causes the vein to collapse and seal shut. Within a few weeks, your body naturally absorbs the treated vein, and it fades from view.
The treatment also targets the feeder vein (the source that supplies the spider veins). This helps prevent them from coming back.
2. Cryo-sclerotherapy
To make spider vein treatment even more comfortable, Dr. Jacobs may use cryo-sclerotherapy.
This technique uses a stream of hyper-cooled air to:
- Numb your skin during treatment
- Constrict the veins for better precision
- Reduce bruising and the risk of skin discoloration
Most people find the procedure very tolerable, with minimal discomfort.
3. VeinGogh®
VeinGogh® uses new technology to deliver radiofrequency energy to your spider veins. This treatment is ideal for very small spider veins (less than 3 mm in diameter) that aren’t suitable for injections.
Unlike sclerotherapy, VeinGogh can’t treat the feeder veins.
4. Oxygen foam sclerotherapy
This type of sclerotherapy is especially effective for larger spider veins. To create the foam, oxygen is mixed with the sclerosant.
Why start now
Spider vein treatments can take a few weeks to reveal the results. Whether you’ve chosen to treat your spider veins with sclerotherapy or with radiofrequency, your body still needs time to shut down and absorb them.
You’ll also need to wear dressings and compression stockings after your treatment. When you schedule your spider vein treatment, you’ll need to factor in this recovery time.
That said, if you start now, you’ll be ready by peak summer.
